What Is Outdoorithm Collective?
We're a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that takes families camping together. Not a gear company. Not a tour operator. Not an Instagram brand. We're a community of real families — parents, kids, grandparents, single-parent households, blended families — who believe the outdoors belongs to everyone, not just people who grew up doing it.
We handle the hard parts: finding and reserving campsites in California's most beautiful parks, providing tents and sleeping bags and camp stoves from our community gear library, planning meals, and building a group of families who look out for each other. You show up. We take care of the rest.
Our name comes from a simple idea — that the algorithm for getting outdoors isn't complicated. It's just: go outside, bring people you care about, and let nature do its thing. No prerequisite experience. No gear test. No gatekeeping.

We Provide the Gear
Our community gear library includes tents, sleeping bags, camp stoves, lanterns, and more. Cost should never be the reason a family doesn't go camping. Borrow what you need, return it when you're done.
We Plan Everything
Campsite reservations, meal coordination, activity suggestions, packing lists — we handle the logistics so you can focus on being present with your family. No more Googling “how do I reserve a California campsite” at midnight.
Families Camp Together
This isn't a solo backpacking club. Our trips are group campouts where families share campsites, kids play together, and adults swap stories around the fire. First-timers camp alongside veterans. Everyone helps. Nobody solos.
Radically Inclusive
We don't care what your tent looks like, what brand your hiking boots are, or whether you've ever built a fire. Every background, every family structure, every experience level — you belong here.
Who Our Members Are
Our community is as diverse as California itself. We have families from the Bay Area, Sacramento, the Central Valley, and Southern California. Single parents. Two-dad households. Multigenerational families where grandma is the one who insisted everyone go camping. Families with toddlers, teenagers, and everything in between.
What our members have in common isn't gear or experience — it's curiosity. They wanted to give their kids something different from screens and schedules. They wanted deeper friendships built on shared adventures instead of small talk. They wanted to try camping but didn't want to figure it all out alone.
Many of our most active members had never camped before joining. Now they lead trips, mentor new families, and volunteer their time to make the community stronger. That's not an accident — it's what happens when people feel genuinely welcome.
What a Typical Trip Looks Like
Our trips run three to four days, usually over a long holiday weekend, at group campsites in California's state and national parks — places like Pinnacles, Kings Canyon, Lassen Volcanic, and Spicer Reservoir. Here's how a weekend goes:
Arrive & Settle In
Families arrive mid-afternoon to find their tents already standing. Experienced campers help newcomers get oriented. Kids find each other within minutes. A communal dinner brings everyone together, then we gather for an opening circle. The campfire gets lit. Stories start.
Explore Together
The middle days are loosely structured on purpose. Group hikes for those who want them, and always an easier version. Nature crafts and water time for the younger kids. Some families explore the park; others hang back and read by the creek. Communal dinners and campfires close out the evenings, often with music, songs, or stargazing.
Pack Up & Reflect
A relaxed last morning with coffee and breakfast, then breaking down camp together, which goes fast when thirty people do it. Before everyone heads home we gather for a brief circle and share one moment from the trip that meant something. It's always the highlight.

Nobody Solos
No family sets up alone their first time. No parent cooks dinner while wrangling three kids without backup. We look out for each other.

Public land belongs to all of us. You don't need to earn your place at the trailhead. Bring your family, take up space, and know that you belong here as much as anyone.

Joining Outdoorithm Collective is simple and free. We're a nonprofit, not a subscription service. Here's how it works:
Fill Out an Application
Tell us about your family, your interest in camping, and what you're hoping to get from the community. It takes about 5 minutes.
Get Welcomed In
We review applications to make sure the community stays safe and aligned with our values. Most families are approved within a few days.
RSVP for Your First Trip
Browse upcoming trips, pick one that works for your schedule, and RSVP. We'll send you a packing list, arrange gear if you need it, and pair you with an experienced family for your first campout.
Membership is free. We fund our operations through voluntary contributions and grants — never mandatory dues. We believe cost should never prevent a family from accessing the outdoors.
Where We're Going Next
We run family camping trips year-round across California — from coastal redwood groves to high-desert stargazing in Joshua Tree. Our 2026 calendar includes trips to Pinnacles National Park, Kings Canyon, Lassen Volcanic, Big Sur, Lake Tahoe, and more.
Every trip is designed for mixed experience levels. If it's your first time, you'll camp next to a family that's been out with us before. If you're experienced, you'll get the chance to mentor someone new. That's how community works.
Questions New Families Ask
“We've never camped before. Is that okay?”
More than okay — it's kind of our thing. A large number of our members had never spent a night in a tent before their first Outdoorithm trip. We pair first-time families with experienced ones so nobody feels lost or unprepared.
“We don't own any camping gear.”
No problem. Our gear library has everything you need — tents, sleeping bags, pads, stoves, cookware, lanterns. You can borrow gear for free on any trip. Many families camp with us several times before deciding to buy their own equipment (and some never do — that's fine too).
“Is this just for two-parent families?”
Absolutely not. We welcome every family structure — single parents, grandparents, foster families, chosen families, families with two moms or two dads, multi-generational households. Our community reflects the real diversity of California families, and we're stronger for it.
“How much does it cost?”
Nothing. Membership is free and so are the trips, including the gear and the food. Campsite fees, permits and communal meals are covered by donations and grants. We're a nonprofit — our goal is access, not profit. If you have the means and want to chip in, contributions are welcome and completely optional.
