15 Camping Hacks from Experienced Campers

Camping is a wonderful way to connect with nature and escape the everyday hustle — but it comes with its share of logistics. From setting up camp to cooking outdoors, a few smart tricks make everything easier. These fifteen come from years of family camping with the Outdoorithm Collective community: tips to stay organized, save space, and be ready for whatever the trip throws at you.

Tent camping hacks

  1. String lights for ambiance and navigation

String lights help you find your site after dark on the way back from the restroom (still bring a headlamp!) and give you nice ambient lighting to hang out into the night without disturbing your neighbors.

  2. Always bring patch kits

Keep patch kits for your tent and sleeping pad — the two things you absolutely don't want leaking. If they don't come with the item, buy them at the same time so you don't forget.

  3. Use a doormat outside your tent

A cheap rubber mat outside the tent door gives you a place to store shoes overnight (keeping shoes outside keeps the tent a LOT cleaner) and a spot to put them on in the morning without stepping in dirt.

  4. Hang a shoe organizer for storage

Use the pockets for small items — wallet, keys, headlamps. It keeps the campsite organized and everything findable. Never store food or scented toiletries in your tent.

Food & kitchen hacks

  1. Protect your eggs with a plastic holder

Cardboard cartons get soggy in the cooler and crack. A plastic egg holder keeps eggs whole and fresh the whole trip.

  2. Pre-mix spices in small containers

Save old spice containers (or tic-tac boxes) and fill them with your trip's spice mixes instead of packing separate jars. A portable spice rack in minimal space — the boxes also work great for matches.

  3. Use hanging kitchen organizers

A hanging utensil organizer puts your cooking gear at hand while you make a meal, then rolls up small for storage.

  4. Stock up on ziplock bags

Organize food, stash matches and toiletries, keep electronics dry. Lightweight, compact, reusable.

  5. Invest in a quality cooler

Thick insulation and a tight seal keep food and drinks cold much longer. Look for one that's easy to clean, with a drain plug.

  6. Pack a portable camping stove

Campfires are for atmosphere; a compact stove lets you actually cook in any weather.

Essential gear & organization hacks

  1. Always carry a multi-tool

Blades, screwdrivers, can opener, gear repair — one pocket-sized tool covers a remarkable range of campsite problems.

  2. Baby wipes are a camping essential

Spills in the car, the cooler, the tent — and freshening up when water is limited. Always pack them.

  3. Bring a pop-up trash can

Ditch the trash bag swinging off the picnic table that tears and attracts animals. A pop-up can opens and packs away in seconds.

  4. Use a headlamp instead of a flashlight

Hands free for cooking, setting up camp, and midnight bathroom runs. Every family member should have their own.

  5. Use a comprehensive packing checklist

Before every trip, run a checklist so nothing gets forgotten. Ours is free, interactive, and printable — check it off as you pack.
